LVA TUTOR TRAINING WORKSHOP ON THURSDAY, JULY 19

by Literacy Volunteers and Advocates on 07/14/12

A modest investment of time has the potential to produce high dividends for LVA tutors and their learners.

LVA will be showing two videos that address important literacy skills on Thursday, July 19 at 6:30 PM. Tutors found both videos to be very helpful when they were shown at new tutor orientation sessions held earlier this year.

Each video demonstrates how tutors can strive to overcome problems that are likely to be frustrating when working with learners who have severe reading difficulties.

Teaching Reading to Adults: Word Recognition Strategies and Teaching Reading to Adults: Comprehension Strategies place strong emphasis on matching instruction to the individual needs of learners.

Each video is only half-an-hour long. After viewing each video, tutors will have the opportunity to discuss the suggested strategies with LVA staff.

Ashley Luttmer, LVA program director, emphasizes, "Tutors who've watched the videos at our orientation sessions found each one to be of great help. I think both new and longtime tutors will profit by coming to LVA's offices this Thursday to view and discuss the videos and the needs of their learners."

LVA is thrilled to announce that two of its learners have
been featured on NPR (88.5 WAMU) as part of a five-part
series on Adult Education called Yesterday's Dropouts. The interview can be found by clicking the WAMU link below. We are so proud of our learners and their dedication to literacy.
