Kenneth holds a doctorate in educational leadership from NOVA Southeastern University and is a veteran educator; he has sixteen years of teaching and administrative experience in K12 education in the District of Columbia Public Schools as a Principal, Assistant Principal and Classroom Teacher. In addition to his K12 teaching experience; Kenneth was an Adjunct Professor at the University of the District of Columbia Community College and works in the Department of Teacher Preparation at John Hopkins School of Education located in Baltimore, Maryland. Kenneth’s instructional knowledge and administrative experience have proven beneficial and demonstrates that he has the capacity and commitment to assist LVA in achieving its broad organizational and educational goals.
Office and Intake Manager
Cheryl joined LVA in August 2008. At LVA, Cheryl fills a variety of roles - intake manager, receptionist, counselor to learners, classroom aide, and other duties, required to assist in LVA’s success. Cheryl’s cheery disposition and warm heart are key to many of the learners’ continued engagement with the program and subsequent progress. Before joining LVA, Cheryl was the lead medical clerk at DC General Hospital – Phoenix Medical Center, where she managed patient files and data patient confidentiality in the HIV/AIDS treatment center. As an adult learner Cheryl knows firsthand about many of the challenges facing LVA learners and is always ready to lend an empathetic ear. Cheryl has lived in DC for 25 years and is an active member of the community. Cheryl’s added valued to LVA is echoed by adult learners constantly.
Heather began her relationship with LVA as a one-to-one tutor. After a year of tutoring she also became a math workshop instructor. She joined the staff as Program Coordinator in the summer of 2014, responsible for administering the one-to-one tutoring program and providing administrative support to the Executive Director. Heather is a graduate of the Coast Guard Academy. Her first tour out of the Academy was as an engineering officer on the USCGC Polar Sea. She then attended Naval Flight Training and was designated as a fixed wing aviator. During her two aviation tours she achieved every qualification possible including Flight Instructor/Flight Examiner, responsible for training and upgrading all of the junior pilots at the unit. During her second tour she worked as the Aviation Standardization Officer and the Administration Officer for a 300 person unit. After leaving the service she continued to teach people. In addition to her roles at LVA she was a rowing coach for Elizabeth Seton High School and volunteered as a field trip leader and in-class instructor’s aide with the Washington Youth Garden.
Educational Coordinator - Admin
Cheryl comes to adult education after a professional background in the service and communications industries. Today her diverse background serves to bring her to an intense empathy with adult learners. She has a Bachelor’s degree from Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida where she majored in English. Cheryl joined LVA in the spring of 2015 as a teacher’s aide. She transitioned to her role as an Adult Basic Education instructor in the fall of 2015. She added a new role in 2016 as LVA ’s Educational Coordinator.
