Training

To prepare you to help your learner, we offer training sessions in Washington, D.C., throughout the year.

The training provides practical, hands-on information on how to work with an adult who is learning how to read.

Our training takes place every six to eight weeks, over two sessions in a single week:

  • Wednesday (Evening)
  • Saturday (All day; we provide breakfast and lunch)

We also ask you to cover the cost of your materials. Your contribution enables us to apply much-needed funds to serving our learners.

Ongoing Tutor Support:

At LVA, we continue to support you long after you have been trained and matched with an adult learner.

As a tutor, you have access to these opportunities:

  • Tutor Network: As an LVA tutor, you will join a network of more than 120 fellow tutors who have had richly varied experiences. You have opportunities to interact with your fellow tutors through tutor networking sessions, a tutor listserve, and special events.

  • Resource Library: You are welcome to visit our resource library, where you can peruse materials, make copies, and talk to staff.

  • Online Training Aids: This Web site includes links to other educational Web sites, as well as a list of common words that you may use in your tutoring sessions.
